Palazzo del Podestà 1

Palazzo del Podestà

Great architectural and environmental value for this public building, which was built by Angelo da Orvieto shortly after the construction of the Palazzo Comunale. Commissioned by the Tarlati of Pietramala, it was finished in 1368 when the Municipality rented more than half of the stores below.

The architect found peculiar stylistic solutions that had never been used, using filarotti of polished and squared pietra serena. On the stores on the ground floor, at the lunettes above the portals, one can admire worn friezes and coats of arms of the Podestas who ruled the city.

The palace, in addition to a series of stupendous mullioned windows with two lights on the main floor, retains only one facade intact, the one facing Corso Cavour. The facade on Piazza Matteotti was entirely redone by Nicola Barbioni in 1687, and the loggia on Piazza Fanti was built in 1620. Very special and of great historical and cultural interest is the double hour and minute clock, with the unique feature of the wind rose dial placed above them.

The entrance vault to the palace is indicated by wider arch and communicates with the square behind, while the only restoration, dating from 1921, concerns only the mullioned windows with two lights.

Today it is the symbol of the city; located on Pizza Matteotti in the historic center, it represents an iconic figure of the city's social and cultural identity.
